Rug Weaving – A New Education in Denmark

VÆVEHUSET for Craft and Design in Denmark is introducing a brand-new education which teaches solely Rug Weaving. This training is unique, in its type, for Denmark and the Nordic Region.

Rug Weaving is a larger field than might be imagined. In the last 7 years, the VÆVEHUSET together with Studio VÆVERNES HUS has reinterpreted and redeveloped approximately 50 traditional weaving techniques into the rug making process. This effort has helped to preserve the almost forgotten knowledge involved in the production of handwoven rugs. As a result, many Danish weavers have now found the courage to weave rugs again. Our efforts have also led to a new mindset, which breaks away from the traditional perception of what Rug Weaving is.

Within hand weaving, Rug Weaving is unique and it is not really possible to transfer your general weaving experience over to rug weaving as this requires specialist skills, that do not come naturally. It is not necessarily more difficult, just different.

In this Rug Weaving education, we will place particular emphasis on the fact that craftsmanship and design should go hand in hand. Therefore, the training will teach an interaction between design development, weaving theory and “Håndelag” (skill training). This training is for beginners (with 1 year experience), experienced and also advanced weavers, who want to discover new inspiration and ways to develop art and craft.
